About Saut
Speaking is faster than typing. Saut exists so you can use that anywhere, without handing your voice to a company.
Why it exists
Dictation has quietly become excellent — good enough that typing out a long message now feels like a chore. But almost every tool that does it well sends your microphone to someone else's server, wraps it in a subscription, or both. That's a strange trade to make for something as personal as your own voice.
Saut takes the other path. The speech model runs on your machine. There is no account to make, no server to trust, and no bill at the end of the month. You press a key, you talk, and the words show up where you're already working.
What's under the hood
Saut runs open speech-recognition models locally — OpenAI's Whisper family and NVIDIA's Parakeet. You pick the one that suits your hardware: smaller models are fast on any laptop, larger ones trade speed for accuracy. Whisper handles 99 languages.
The app itself is built with Rust and Tauri, which is why a full speech-to-text tool installs in 13 MB and idles quietly in your tray.
Free, and staying that way
Saut is free. Not free-for-now, not free-until-we-raise-a-round. There's no paid tier, no usage cap, and nothing held back. If it saves you time, that's the whole point.
